Jack - I totally agree with you re Peggy - she was quintessentially the 'younger' sister. I guess that's why when I wrote 'S&A at War', Peggy became her own person with her own opinions, which ticked Nancy off no end! Nancy did tend to be short with Peggy if she didn't come up to her(Nancy's) expectations. You only need to look at the thunderstorm episodes in a couple of the books.
With the inherited income query, AR wrote for ordinary children such as those he knew at the time. Did he have access or even know some of the desperately poverty-stricken children of the 30's?
