I concur with your statement about how I felt when I first read the books at age about 8 or 9 years old, if I remember correctly :-)
I find the current discussion interesting, but it hasn't materially affected my enjoyment of the books. To this "colonial", the continuing obsession with "class" shown by most people in UK is also an interesting phenomenon. I think that AR's characters are all believable without having to assign a class to them.
