Peter, to be honest it's not that important what class the characters are. Some of us, and I'm happy to be one of them, like delving into the minutae of favorite books and authors, but enjoy others as is. English class systems always interest me(one programme I've got a lot of fascinating information from is 'Who Do You Think You Are', the search for ancestry) possibly because it's a bit of a foreign intrigue that at the same relates back to why my ancestors left the UK some 150 - 180 years ago. But if it makes you unhappy and wrecks a joy of yours, then ignore threads like this and stick to the ones that do appeal. Character dissection and analysis does destroy some of the magic for some, I agree, but then so does engine technicalities for others. To me still, Mrs Blackett is a nice woman with a nice family - and I still wish I was one of them living by the lake.
