A very fair summing up of the 'deference' question. I think that you are right in your conclusion. Other evidence against the 'Blacketts/Turners as gentry hypothesis' includes:

  1. Beckfoot appears to be a 19th C. build, therefore not old enough to be the principal house of an old land-owning family;
  2. Nothing in Beckfoot to suggest any ties to the surrounding farms (e.g. James Turner's study is a prospector's laboratory not an estate office);
  3. Traditional estate owner recreational pursuits such as horse-riding, hunting or entertaining are conspicuous by their absence at Beckfoot.

I also agree with your earlier assessment of the GA. She is so middle class. Though I do stand by my original comments about the Amazons and CF. They have moments when their behaviour seems very upper class. I guess if the Crossleys were the original template for AR their class and behaviour would have been a bit of a confused muddle as well.
