There's also the point that Bob Blackett would have had to be around long enough to 1) get to know Jim and Mollie Turner and 2) make an unfavorable impression on the GA for whatever reason. Granted, he could have been a summer visitor on an extended stay, either, like Ransome, at friends of the family, or as a PG at a nearby farmhouse (Swainson's?). The more likely reasons for Maria Turner's disapproval would seem to be a lower status (sorry!) as an area farmer, or as a PG. Surely if he'd been of a local family of the Turners' status (whatever that may have been) or better, he'd have been acceptable to her as consort to Mollie.
