I haven't read it but would point out books for pre-teens and teens(10 - 16) are generally fairly rugged nowdays. The last few Harry Potters are pretty obvious but if you look, for example, at one of the pre-eminent series for that age, John Marsden's 'Tomorrow When the War Began' books, you'll see what I mean. An English example in the same vein would be William Nicholson's 'The Wind on Fire' trilogy.
