The reaction to Jock's links to old railway maps prompts me to
disclose to Tarboarders a couple of publications that I have
recently - more by luck than good judgement - obtained.

The Kendal & Windermere Railway by Dick Smith
ISBN 0-9540232-0-X - price GBP 6.95
The Coniston Railway by Michael Andrews & Geoff Homes
ISBN 0-9540232-3-4

The former is of course still alive and kicking; the latter
closed in 1961.
Both booklets issued under the auspices of the Cumbrian Railways
Association and available either through Amazon or Kirkland
Books of (appropriately) Kendal.
For anyone who does not know them I can recommend Kirkland Books
(Linden Burke is the go-to guy) who have a wide selection of
AR material, fell-walking (Wainwright) books and also railway
memorabilia. Try kirklandbooks@mac.com

The two books mentioned cover the complete history of both the
K&W and the Consiton lines with many photographs that may help
to visualise how, for instance, Windermere Station looked when
Roger & Titty arrived at the start of PP.
