I wonder whether any TarBoarders have read John Verney's wonderful Friday's Tunnel and its sequel February's Road?

Long ago I read a book which, from the description, must have been Friday's Tunnel, but I had forgotten the title and the author's name. I had also forgotten that a tunnel featured in the book. All I remembered was a family called Callender, children called Friday and February, a house described in the book as not old but seeming old to me, and a substance supposedly not made of atoms. I remember thinking it rather implausible because of this substance.
