Lately I've been reading (and greatly enjoying!) books by Andy Adams. He wrote (from experience) highly realistic novels about the American West. He is best known for The Log of a Cowboy, a story of taking a herd of cattle from Mexico to Montana. He also wrote two novels about the Wells Brothers, two boys not much older than John and Nancy, who learn to turn their homestead into a cattle ranch. While they have some adult guidance, much is on their own. The titles of these are : The Young Cattle Kings and The Ranch on the Beaver.
One shudders to think what Nancy would have done upon reading these. I picture a descent on Jackie's farm, with a cattle drive over the fells, or perhaps down to Rio.
