I am grateful to Owen and Laurence for their comments. I am not sure about the logistics of earth closets, but I haven't followed up Jock's link. However, I think Owen's 'shallow digging' idea is just enough to acquit AR of impracticality. I suppose all fiction is fantasy really, no matter how realistic the author tries to make things. So on that note perhaps this slightly disagreeable topic can be laid to rest for a bit. . . .
(I am only sorry that the 'FAQ' site isn't up and running at present, as I reckon the recent exchanges on this topic might be of great help when the inevitable enquiries are made by readers new to Ransome.)
