The 1930s house I grew up in had a marble slab in the larder, a stone floor and a wire mesh window (presumably along the liens of the meat safe mesh. I remember being told by my grandfather, whose father was a grocer, that in summer slabs of ice would be delivered to customers two or three times a week.
