Yes Fiona. It was Jacky in PM who showed the Ds where to keep the milk bottle. It was in a hole in the moss beside the creek, covered with a flat stone.
In SA and SD the adventurers went each day to the local farm for a jug of fresh milk. Though one would have thought that by the end of the day the milk would have been a bit off unless they had some way of keeping it cool.
A bottle with a cork would have been possible to put in the lake, but we are usually told about something like a tin container which would not go in the lake very well without getting lake water in the milk.
Before domestic refrigeration became the norm, ice boxes were common in Australia. These were an insulated wooden cabinet with wire shelves, and a separate compartment at the top into which a block of ice was put. Used to last several days, and the ice was delivered by a man with a cart (horse drawn early on, but motorised later).
