I always assumed the steak and kidney pie was tinned in that instance. There had been mention earlier in the books several times when the tinned version was used, and pretty popular I think.

Too simple an answer about the plastic on meats, Rob. If that is the only reason the plastic is used, then why did I find much drier meats in the markets in England, with the cut pieces wrapped in paper, which didn't make a mess in the bags on the way home? I am interested in the history of the difference between the US & England. Assuming that the people who emigrated to the US from England had been raised on dry meat storage, why do we now have these wet, potentially slimy cuts wrapped in plastic over here? Do you have plastic-wrapped meats in larger cities? I do buy my meats at large markets in a large metropolitan area, not at the village meat counter.
