So is it normal to write in the third person?

Much more normal than to write in the first person. This may have changed recently as we entered the 'me' generation, but in AR's time I believe that the majority of novels were written in the third person.

A truly skilful first person writer such as Anthony Powell could handle his narrative with many characters to make it effectively third person, without inducing vertigo. But few writers are that good.
