Continuing the meals discussion below: Our local supermarket in W London, has a 'fresh meat' counter where you can buy cuts of meat of your choice ie no pre-packaging and to the quantity you require. I suspect this is now common in all larger supermarket. And we also have a stunning family butcher's shop which sells only British produce, mostly organic, but somewhat pricey!

We take our first year students out into the wilds of Sussex during their first week and subject them to a 4 day course of experimental archaeology. This included dealing with animal protein (ie deer and rabbits) which they process using flints. We don't catch the beasties but we do cook them in a variety of ways before eating them. To keep the rabbits fresh before cooking, we hang them in the trees and stuff their insides with wild garlic (ramsons!) to keep insects off them.
