As the Amazons carry a small barrel of ‘feastable drinks’ around, they must have had a feast with cold drink reasonably often to make transporting the barrel worthwhile! Perhaps they followed an old naval tradition, and had a drink when the sun was ‘over the yardarm’. Did sailors really have a regular 11 am or mid-day drink, or was it just the Captain?

In PP, the Swallows buy ‘Two doz. pop’, to carry in their knapsacks (Ch XXVII). Two years earlier in the same shop, Captain John asked for ‘Four bottles of grog, please’. Susan gravely corrected him: ‘Ginger Beer’ (SA Chapter VIII).
