I sent a note to the webmaster at cuni asking why a picture of AR is on a web site devoted to Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings.

Vladimir Horak responds:

"Why not? :-)

"The Ransome books are very popular in the Czech Republic and also between Czech Tolkien Society Members.

"Our Society has a newspaper, Minas Tirith. In Minias Tirith 4 (http://www.cuni.cz/jrrt/tolkien/ minastirith/mt4.html) is a short information about The Arthur Ransome Society.

"In Minas Tirith 6 (www.cuni.cz......minastirith/mt6.html) (there is also link on a picture) there is another short information, that in the Czech literature newspaper "Labyrint" (first volume in 1995, author Lukas Cizek) was an article about Arthur Ransome. The picture is a copy from Labyrint. I do not know if Labyrint is accessible on the net.

"Author of Minas Tirith is Jirka Grunt (e-mail jgru4123@dec59.ruk.cuni.cz), but he did not read mail in the last six months."

Thus the state of our knowledge on the subject. No further explanation of Terry Pratchett, although I suspect he also is popular amongst Czech Tolkien Society members.

I sent Vladimir the URL for the AR web site but he wasn't able to access it; I hope he will try again as I did send him the URL correctly as far as I can tell.
