Thanks Jock - the reproduced Barrow News article of 1967 in the 'Lord of the Manor' link is a very useful find. Although that proposal to re-open the Coniston copper mines came to little or nothing, I have been wondering lately if another attempt will be made, in view of the high copper prices recently. A month ago, on the metals market copper rose above $8,000 a tonne. A 21st Century 'Squashy Hat' might be tempted . . .

BTW, it does not take much copper to make up 1 tonne - it is a very heavy metal, and a lovely metal to handle. As it happens, I am regularly handling high grade copper at present (sorting through old printing plates), and every time I think of Captain Flint saying 'Gold . . . Who wants it if there's enough of this about?' I agree!
