I agree. AR was clearly a phenomenally well-read man, especially, I suppose, on account of his belle-lettristic years in Bohemian London. It seems to me that in concentrating (understandably enough) on AR's reading of sailing and fishing classics, Ransomeites have hardly begun to scrape the surface of AR's reading more generally.

And not just poetry, of course. For example, what about the undoubted connections between Ruskin and Ransome (literary connections, I mean, not biographical ones via Collingwood)? Grevel Lindop, in his excellent Literary Guide to the Lake District, suggests that the S and A novels are saturated by attitudes traceable ultimately to Ruskin. And William Morris too - we all know what happened when the young AR read Mackail's life of Morris...
