I've sailed and kayaked on Coniston Water in the dark on anumber of occasions. It is o.k. if it is just dark i.e. not blowing a hooley or covered in clag. You can usually see the out line of the hills on the sky line and the shore.
Once we crossed from Coniston Hall to Comorant Island leaving a light house tree in the care of a shore party. The wind got up bringing surprisingly large waves. There was no sign of the light house sowe had to guess our landing to discover that the shore party had decamped to go to the toilet. This never happened to the S.& A.s.
