Jock - do you have shares in Amazon, by any chance? Seriously, thank you for the links - they are useful to know, and I particularly recommend the Tomalin book.

Crowhurst said or wrote at some point that being alone at sea 'finds you out', ie it relentlessly exposes any weaknesses in your character. It certainly did with him. I am not criticising Crowhurst, as I would not have had the courage to do what he did, though some called it foolhardiness at the time. One thing which the film did not really show, and the book does, is that suspicions had already been aroused among some of the observers of the voyage back home. His reports as to position started to not quite add up. It is a fascinating story, and indeed worthy of an AR novel ("I Did Mean to Go to Sea but Shouldn't Have"?). But still there's the mystery of what happens out there at sea . . . . .
