how much should your knowledge of an author or artist or composer's private life affect how you view his output?

Not a lot, I'd have thought. Of course they will affect your view of the whole experience of their work, but unless you are searching fo motivations (which is perfectly legitimate and fun) I'd say just enjoy the experience.

I know about AR and Tabitha (to the extent that it's been made public) but it really doesn't affect my enjoyment of the books. Just like (on a rather more massive scale) I know about Wagner and anti-semitism. But that doesn't stop the music being pretty terrific, the tunes being good.
