You are absolutly correct. We keep giving anecdotal evidence but not a solution. And refering to children and young adults as "kids" is not meant to be derogotory, it is a popular term which may not be the best as hopefully we aren't goats (maybe it is a putdown on goats to call humans "kids").

I think as long as we are holding up Mr. Ransome's characters as examples of what we would like our young people (almost used the "K" word) to be, then I feel that we are on the correct path (and "on topic"). While it is difficult in this electronic age to interest almost anyone in books, especially fiction, we must still keep trying to instill the excitement of independent responsible outdoor activities for our children.

I have sent my grandson a copy of "Swallows and Amazons", but I don't know if it has "taken" - there are so many exciting activities in San Francisco for fifth graders - and he does like books. Maybe "Swallows and Amazons" should be made into an electronic game (or did I just open another can of worms) to get the attention of the "electronic generation".
