I think David you have it right -- references to latrines etc. just weren't
really part of writing at the time, and not only in childrens' books either.

But I honestly think that part of the reason was that its an obvious 'given' --
everybody but the very young are perfectly aware of the necessity, but generally
the point doesn't further the plot in any way (as opposed say to sea-sickness).
Unless the author is intent on driving home to his or her readers the value of
proper latrine-digging and sanitation
