I reckon at least 30 miles, not to mention the effects of Cumbrian beer and Collingwood girls!

I think we are judging by modern standards MikeB. Several of my father's friends told me that they would walk 12 miles, sometimes with wives or girlfriends (chaperoned of course!) to our nearest large town of Reading in Berkshire. There they would drink and go to a dance on Saturday night. They would then walk home again.
I did ask why they did not go by train or bus. The reply was "Why waste money on fares - when you can spend it on Beer!"
Mind you I would not fancy returning to Wall Nook across the fields on a dark overcast night.
I wonder whether AR picked up a few ideas about astral navigation whilst walking home on a clear night. Perhaps if he had drunk a few too many beers he might have been "tacking" as well.
