As always with AR, the answer lies in his skill as a story teller. Crashing gears were fun. There's nothing a child likes more than catching out a grown-up... So it's a comic turn as in Shakespeare (oh lord, those incomprehensible puns). Pacing and structure are all the explanation. I don't think it's anything to do with cars.
