I recently came across the following in AR's The ABC of Physical Culture (1904):
... that marvellously healthy race, the Japanese, are strong believers in the water theory, and drink, many of them, about a gallon a day, regarding their internal arrangements as a large drain which needs periodical flushing quite as much as a city sewer.
