It appears that the issue isn't with being Amazons, but pirates.

WH Chapter III, Page 42, bottom of page on Cape hardbound:

Nancy to Dorothea:
" but what are you? In real life, I mean. We're explorers and sailors."

And then

"Well, I'm Nancy Blackett, Captain of the Amazon. ... Captain John Walker, of the Swallow...."

Later,

Dick and Dorothea heard how the four Swallows were living in the Eskimo settlement at Holly How, while the two Amazons were sleeping in the Eskimo settlement at Beckfoot...

So they are still Swallows and Amazons, and still explorers and sailors, but it appears the pirate part is seasonal.
