AR gives us quite a range of young male characters to get to grips with. In some ways they can be more introspective than the females who, Titty and Dorothea excepted, are more focussed on acting rather than thinking. Both John and Tom Dudgeon are seen as capable of analysis and then 'breaking the rules' when it's the right thing to do. In John's case, it's a case of sound seamanship (WD), in Tom's, it's a moral decision (CC). Both feel the need to confess when they find that they have done something that they are not sure about (SA & CC). The Mastadon has a philosophical debate with himself regarding split loyalties, the 'Mastadon's Dilemma' (SW). Then there's Squashy Hat, for all those who don't like 'dominant' males.
