John appears to be grasping, in his left hand, a line that leads up to a whip block, then down to the deck by the stbd shrouds.

It then seems to run aft. I can't see why - it is clear from the text that the halyards are not handled from the cockpit. Furthermore when the full main was set the lead to the block would be utterly wrong, giving very little advantage when setting sail, and obstructing the passage forward on the starboard side. In the picture the block is of course high up because the Goblin is fully reefed.

Yet one would expect AR to be pedantically correct in these details. For example you can see the jib halyard falls leading into the water just aft of John - who doesn't notice this until he tidies the ship up to receive the pilot seventy pages further on.
