I can understand why the block would be well above deck on the main halyard when the manisail was reefed, but not otherwise. Then I come back to how ineffective it would be to have the captive end at the chainplates.

I have limited experience of Naval Officers aboard, but have formed the impression that they are much more useful than steamrollers, than nearly all other crew, and than the skipper!
