This discussion also displays a change in social culture. Both Beckfoot and Alma Cottage were on the telephone (FELLSIDE 75 and WOOLVERSTONE 30), but complex issues were arranged by telegram.
Telephoning was certainly expensive, but neither family was poor, and it is hard today to imagine that the Ss and As would not have spoken to each other after (eg) WD.
