When Ginger knocks down the 'Weinkel' (gawdelpus) by dropping a box onto it, the wing as it collapses is described as fabric, so I guess that's a fair assumption. (I did enjoy the reading on Listen Again...)

I think PanAm had started transatlantic flights, with metal flying boats, just before the war, and tickets cost a bomb, so taking a steamer across does sound likely.

The Age of Roger was a little later.
