I agree with Ed's appraisal of suggested reading lists for our children here in the US. Wonderful books that were written years ago and have lasted through the ages are excluded; modern "literature" designed to appeal to hesitant readers through the use of simple story lines, comic-like illustrations and catchy titles are given top billing, even if the actual writing is poor quality.
I would like to point out that AR's well-written books are not the only ones left off the lists--there are many wonderful pieces of children's literature from many countries which are no longer encouraged. I also find that teachers, in general, don't really want to hear about the good books we all read as children. I guess they may feel that what they have chosen to expose their students to is good enough. Too bad for the children. I believe that people are better when they are surrounded by good things to inspire them.
