My sister liked the Malcolm Saville books and I read them too- in fact, I recently re-read one of them (I can't remember the title but the inner cover is red) and it's still sitting on the night table by the bed in Geneva, where we were last summer...

They were fine. But as you say, for slightly older children; more explicitly to do with human relationships than AR's stories. The parents have problems that affect the children, for example. And in some of the books the children themselves develop adolescent relationships.
