Having remained blissfully ignorant of the nuances of grammar for my entire education; I go with the what sounds best when you read it out approach. It generally works quite well although my last bout of editing featured a sentance that got re-written five times and then deleted completely. Perhaps reading out is also the route to waffle elimination?
