My understanding is that they add something horrible to meths to stop you drinking it. Otherwise, from memory, it is tasteless, colourless and not obviously distinguishable from ethanol - until you drink it. Having said that, I knew a man who drank meths regularly (mixed with cider - aka electric soup), for at least a couple of years. No doubt he died not long afterwards, and he would have to be very desperate to acclimatise to the taste. Personally I recommend real Absinthe instead, if you can afford it, and can get hold of it.

The white stuff used for Mamod steam engines, junior chemistry sets and the like was fairly common when I was a child. I alway assumed that it was a form of paraffin mixed with an accelerant to make it burn hotter. I never realised that it was so chemically and lethally interesting. Is it similar to the white fire-lighters people use nowadays for starting barbecues?
