In Chapter IX of BS, the D&Gs have ‘Money to Burn’ from the Big Pike. They put on a spread for Tom and the Ds. Bill tips the Christmas pudding out of the tin, pours some liquid over it from a bottle, lights it and comes “backward into the cabin, bearing the Christmas pudding in a sea of blue flames. ….. There was a most decided smell of methylated spirits”. Bill says “That don’t fare to light without you have a drop of spirit.”

Ginger beer and then the juice of the oranges “took away the last traces of the methylated, which had hung about in people’s mouths in spite of all the sugar.”

PS: Is “Thermos” a generic rather than a brand name now? In Chapter XI of BS, Tom hands over Mrs Dudgeon’s sandwitches and three thermos flasks of hot coffee. NB "thermos", lower case; not Thermos.
