I am wondering whether Ransome's use of the word "dinner" instead of lunch could be related to his Yorkshire upbringing. My early years in England were spent in the south and west of the country staying with my grandparents in Somerset or at school. I recall that lunch was the usual name for the midday meal and, for children, the main meal of the day.
When I went to university in Leeds, I found that the midday meal was dinner. It was the same when I worked in Lancashire, but not in Scotland.
