The bottles of milk we had at school (in my case in the 50s and 60s) were a third of a pint. Even after Mrs T had 'snatched' the milk from school age children local authoriites provided it for under fives in nurseries and play-groups. The nursery or play-group had to pay the milkman and claim the cost back. You could only claim for the exact number of chilren who attended but of course the milkman came before the register was taken so it always ended up as a 'cost' to the chilcare provider. The milkman did, however, provide free straws.
