Maintaining a high standard of conversation includes maintaining a reasonable tone,
even in unreasonable circumstances. I've seen too many discussion areas
degenerate into flamewars and scare off most of their participants. It's a
priority for us to maintain the Guardian talk areas open to all viewpoints
by maintaining that reasonable tone. I think that overall, we've managed to do that.2. There's a line between declaring one's faith in Kali and derailing coherent discussion.
3. Identity on the Net is very tenuous. There's a contract of honor involved
that people are who they say they are; if that contract is broken, then nobody
knows who they're speaking to and discussion is impossible. Therefore, impersonating
other people is incompatible with coherent discussion.4. There's a difference between free speech and being a guest in a private forum.
