*ahem* - by the removal of _all_ of the thread ...

NB. TarBoard policy is :-

We feel that this forum is not a place for unfriendly messages of a personal nature, known as "flames"
- any such postings will be removed from the Tarboard - as, if and when I, or others, get round to it.
Whilst accepting

A Poison Tree - William Blake

I was angry with my friend,
I told my wrath, my wrath did end;
I was angry with my foe,
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

we point out that an international forum is not the place to do it.
Feel free to squabble by email.

I'll follow this up through e-mail, but just to get everyone clear ... freedoms,
such as freedom of speech, apply to public areas and public fora. This is
a private discussion board sponsored by a private organisation for our own
private purposes. Much as you have a right to invite who you will - and not invite
who you won't - into your home, we have such a right in ours.

I think we've been pretty clear about the way we've enforced the rules on this
board. Generally, if you stay on-topic, do not attack other users, and are not
overly loony or offensive, you're welcome in our home. (Who decides these things?
Well, it is our home.)

If you don't wish to abide by our principles, please, go to your own home,
or to a publicly-sponsored area.

Maintaining a high standard of conversation includes maintaining a reasonable tone,
even in unreasonable circumstances. I've seen too many discussion areas
degenerate into flamewars and scare off most of their participants. It's a
priority for us to maintain the Guardian talk areas open to all viewpoints
by maintaining that reasonable tone. I think that overall, we've managed to do that.

2. There's a line between declaring one's faith in Kali and derailing coherent discussion.

3. Identity on the Net is very tenuous. There's a contract of honor involved
that people are who they say they are; if that contract is broken, then nobody
knows who they're speaking to and discussion is impossible. Therefore, impersonating
other people is incompatible with coherent discussion.

4. There's a difference between free speech and being a guest in a private forum.

Thanks for listening.
Agree to abide by our house rules, and you'll be welcome as a guest in our home.
