About soaking the oats: there is no need to soak or otherwise prepare rolled oats at all before cooking; not just Quaker Oats but generic rolled oats, including thick rolled. Just a low boil for about 5 minutes with a teensy bit of salt and about 1.5 water to 1.0 oats.

Possibly the earlier cracked (but not rolled) oats require soaking, but as was pointed out Quaker Oats were rolled to allow easy cooking.

In any case, I suspect the preparation methods suggested would have produced a result nearer to library paste than anything else.
