There is no doubt that hot food is morale boosting so when to eat some rather depends when your morale needs boosting. Probably, it's easier to cook in the day when you are exploring by boat than if your expedition is on foot. Pull in at a convenient cove, collect driftwood, light a fire and while away the heat of the day. As well as being morale boosting hot meals are also sleep inducing, so perhaps they are especially suited for sultry southern summers or long northern evenings.
