Captain Flint gets very sympathetic treatment and he appears to lead a fairly leisurely non-productive life.

In fact the whole Blackett/Turner household receives very sympathetic treatment with the exception of the GA.
From 1984, the Ransomes lived for a couple of years at Lowick Hall, a house with land, tenants and farmers.
So (leaving aside the old question of weather any land was attached to Beckfoot) perhaps he was somewhat
ambivalent about the Captain Flints of this world?
