Mike,
I suppose you know that Yank or Yankee refers to the Dutch nickname and surname Janke, anglicized to Yanke and "used as a nickname for a Dutch-speaking American in colonial times. By extension, according to (the) theory, the term grew to include non-Dutch American colonists as well." (Wikipedia)
To call a citizen of the southern United States a Yankee is a pretty serious insult, even these days, since the southerners fought the Yankees in the Civil War. I agree the term Americans covers both north and south America, so all of them are Americans in a way. Since the term America was orginally applied to the Dutch citizens of the infant United States (original 13 colonies)it sort of stuck. To be painfully correct, most Americans don't deserve the name of Yankee any more than an Englishman deserves the name "Limey" or "Pommie". Relevance to AR? Captain Flint claimed he was the Lord Mayor of San Francisco.
John (Benedict)
