My absolute favorite remains Winter Holiday, followed by Picts and Martyrs. I think one of the main reasons in both cases may be the way that Dick and Dot develop from outsiders into major contributors. Although I could never have aspired to be a Swallow or an Amazon, the D's made 'belonging' seem possible.

I agree that rankings are also partly determined by personal interests as well as what seems realistic. For example, I loved Secret Water for the mapping -- something I spent a fair amount of time doing as a child -- and Missee Lee for the Latin, while Peter Duck reminded me too much of Treasure Island and its imitators. I really prefer the out-takes published in Coots in the North.
