Ed for sounding as if he is able to make TarBoarders jump when he wishes?

Elizabeth, I'm absolutely sure that that was far from the gentle and civilised Ed's intention.
Ed is a scholarly collector of words and phrases, in the same way that some people collect
coins and postage stamps. Some of the material that he collects is quite ordinary, cases
where differences have arisen between UK and USA English. Others are absolute treasures.
Which one of us gave a second glance to cock of the midden (PM) before Ed put this
phrase under the microscope?

Normally Ed's posts gather a few polite comments, sometimes - as occurred after his
performance at a TARS Literary Weekend - the thread is more extended. But never before
or since have any of his posts generated so much feedback as when he first highlighted
the simple phrase, uttered by Nancy in PM,

Water in bathroom.
I'm sure that Ed never expected the amazing result. Not only did the follow up go on
and on and on, TarBoard was split into two rival parties: the Beckfoot Plumbers and the
Back to AR-ists. And now if years later, the President of the Plumbers (the majority party,
I think) teases the Opposition, by saying And once again, we are off to the races... that
should be read in the same spirit as the leader of the latter announcing that his sole aim
in posting is to give TarBoard a good stir and break us out of our comfort zone.
