Of course they did. So did all boys certainly into the late 50s. Including, for instance, the hard winter of '47
Oh lord, didn't we?
Mind you, we may have been hardened and kitted out (woollen vests over cotton, as I remember it) but by golly, I do remember it being cold. But for the children in AR's stories being very cold indeed would have been a normal part of life.
This ritual of under-dressing survives in Britain, but now it's young women, who go half naked in the globally warmed winters, which are plenty cold enough...
