I am not sure that endlessly repeated diversions into topics such as plumbing and railways are what this discussion board was set up for. Now I cant speak with any authority about that, because I did not set up this facility. All I can say is what effect these diversions have on me.

I think it's the nature of the Net that things (like forums) find their own way. It's what happens when lots of people are involved- and I think that, historically, it's a new phenomenon that's arisen with the technology. Of course, the effect it has on you is important- that goes for all of us.

Every now and then, a newcomer arrives, and is welcomed. How many of them stay? In the last 12 months I can only remember one 3rd Amazon. How many female contributors stick around? Only the brave Pam and Elizabeth at the moment. Go figure . . .

I think you've just succinctly described all the newsgroups and forums I've ever experienced. Actually, if you look at pet and small animals newsgroups, I suspect the man/woman ratio is probably the other way about, but broadly the common factor is lots of people making what they want of the space, and voting with their mice.

This place, thanks I suspect to the light but sure touch of the Pilot, is a jolly good one to be. The crash and roar of the barbarian hoards is all too prevalent outside. We're spared it here. But I think that you're talking about human nature. Hard to change.
