...for me, the biggest emotional shock I got from all the books was with Captain Flint's false accusation to John regarding the firework on the houseboat roof.

The injustice! The inhumanity! I knew (at 7, when I first read it) that had Jim spent a moment and asked John about the true nature of events, the entire book would be different. It taught me - and what better thing can you say about any book? - that consideration and thoughtfulness are amongst the best values one can have.
